MR. Bean

Characters and recurring props

The title character, played by Rowan Atkinson, is a childish buffoon who brings various unusual schemes and contrivances to everyday tasks. He lives alone at the address of Flat 2, 12 Arbour Road, Highbury, and it is usually seen in his trademark tweed jacket as well as a skinny red tie. He also usually wears an electronic digital calculator watch. Mr. Bean rarely speaks, and when he is doing, it's generally just one or two mumbled words which can be within a comically low-pitched voice. His name (he names himself "Bean" to other people) and profession, if any, aren't mentioned. Inside the first film adaptation, "Mr." appears on his passport from the "first name" field, and that he is shown employed as a guard at London's National Gallery.

Mr. Bean often seems not aware of basic aspects of what sort of world works, and also the programme usually features his attempts at what would normally be regarded as simple tasks, like floating around, by using a television set, redecorating, or likely to church. The humour largely originates from his original (and sometimes absurd) methods to problems and the total disregard for others when solving them, his pettiness, and occasional malevolence.

At the start of episode two onwards, Mr. Bean falls from your sky in the laser beam, with a choir singing Ecce homo qui peut rrrtre faba ("Behold he that is a bean"), recorded by Southwark Cathedral Choir in 1990. These opening sequences were initially in grayscale in episodes two and three, and were intended by the producers to show his status as a possible "ordinary man cast into the spotlight". However, later episodes showed Mr. Bean dropping from the night sky within a deserted London street against the backdrop of St Paul's Cathedral. Following episodes three and six he could be also shown being sucked right back up into the sky inside the respective background objects (black scene in episode 3 and street scene in episode 6). Atkinson has acknowledged that Bean "has a rather alien aspect to him". Inside the animated series (episode, "Double Trouble") he could be taken in a very spacecraft with "aliens" who look exactly like him as well as have their own plushy toys. In the obvious homage, the aliens send him back in the beam of light and music exactly like the opening of the original Mr. Bean series. Whether Bean is an extraterrestrial is just not clear.
